RICHMOND, Va. (CN) — Democrats in Virginia’s House of Delegates in a reconvene session Wednesday strategically selected 13 of 157 vetoes by Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin in an attempt to override, despite the near certainty that their slim majority wouldn’t have the necessary votes.
The 13 bills allowed Democrats to speak on increasing gun control, expanding voting rights and raising the state’s minimum wage.
Youngkin also vetoed a bill that would have incentivized the implementation of electric vehicle charging stations in rural parts of the state, claiming it was not a good use of resources. The legislation would have created a fund to assist private developers with non-utility costs associated with the stations’ installation.
“We want all Virginians to be a part of our transportation transition. Mr. Speaker, not just those in urban and suburban areas,” Democratic Delegate Rip Sullivan said. “This bill would protect Virginians in what is going to be a fast-changing future.”
